The Frick 3526 screw compressor (part of the large-bore FRICK SGC rotary screw compressor series manufactured by Johnson Controls) plays a critical role in both process refrigeration (chilling) and direct gas compression applications.
Applications
NGL Recovery/Dew Point Control
Natural gas arriving from the wellhead contains valuable heavy hydrocarbons (ethane, propane, butane, pentane). The Frick 3526 is heavily utilized as the primary refrigeration compressor in mechanical refrigeration units (MRUs).
• It compresses refrigerants (typically propane or ammonia) to chill raw natural gas down to sub-zero temperatures.
• This cooling condenses and separates NGLs from the methane stream, meeting required pipeline hydrocarbon dew point specifications.
Vapor Recovery Units (VRU)
At midstream storage terminals and pipeline hubs, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and light gases evaporate from crude or condensate storage tanks.
• Configured for open-cycle gas duty, the Frick 3526 acts as a high-capacity Vapor Recovery Compressor.
• The Frick 3526 captures these low-pressure flash vapors, compresses them, and routes them back into the main gas processing stream or sales pipeline, reducing emissions and preventing product loss.
Gas Gathering/Booster
Rotary screw compressors like the Frick 3526 are ideal for handling high volumes of fluctuating, lower-pressure inlet gas
• The Frick 3526 is used as a booster stage to gather gas from field pipelines and push it into processing plants at the steady flow rate required by downstream equipment
Advantages for Midstream Operators
• Variable Volume Ratio (Vi): Midstream inlet pressures constantly change. The FRICK variable Vi slide stop automatically adjusts the compressor's internal discharge pressure to match the pipeline pressure, completely eliminating over- or under-compression power penalties.
• Stepless Capacity Control: Allows the compressor to seamlessly unload down to ~10% of full load capacity to precisely match fluctuating gas flows without cycling the motor on and off.
• Heavy-Gas & Sour Gas Tolerance: The oil-injected design seals rotor clearances and handles heavy gas compositions, including sour or acid gases (H₂S and CO₂) often found in midstream gas processing.
• Anti-Friction Bearings: Utilizes 100% anti-friction roller bearings that maximize mechanical efficiency and maintain strict rotor alignment, reducing long-term maintenance costs.
