Mud logging is the creation of a detailed record known as a well log of a borehole. This is accomplished by examining the cuttings of rock brought to the surface by the drilling mud. Mud logging is generally undertaken by a third-party mud logging company. Mud logging provides operators and producers with information about the lithology and fluid content of the borehole during drilling operations. This is usually the earliest type of well log.
