Sand separators can either be two or three phase. A two phase separator will separate sand from a liquid; in this case, crude oil. A three phase separator will also separate a third component, usually gas. The separator will produce particulate, gas, and oil. Sand separators can function in several different ways. But the majority utilize centrifugal force, which is often combined with gravity.
When the materials are placed in a centrifuge and then spun, they will separate based on weight. In this case, the sand usually will be pushed to the bottom. There, it can be separated and removed. The oil will remain on top. During separations, gas generally rises to the top without any mechanical agitation. After manual separation has been accomplished, a filtering system is generally employed to clear out any finer particulates.
